I met a friend today who had recently purchased an EH Metal Muff pedal. He asked me to try it out and tell him what I thought of it.
My first impression from the look and feel of it was that this was more heavy duty than most EH pedals. It was really big with 6 knobs. Treble, Bass, Mid, Distortion, Volume and something called Top Boost. I also noticed an extra footswitch, a Boost switch. Well I'm not a metal head so I wasn't very enthusiastic after hearing the name. But after playing around with it for a bit I realized I could get almost any sound of it. Monster Gain, Hi gain, Low gain, No gain, A warm overdrive, A fuzz reminiscent of the Russian Big Muffs, A blues driverish tone. I was impressed. What was great is that when I cranked the volume up almost full I didn't hear any rubbish harsh noises. I was then told about the functionality of the Top Boost switch. So I learned that its basically a treble booster kind of switch to which they have assigned a knob to adjust the level of the treble boost. This was a fucking great feature. Great for playing soaring leads over some nice rhythm playing. The Setup was Epiphone LP Standard > Metal Muff > Marshall TSL Combo and a tiny hint of reverb from an RV-3 pedal after the muff. Simple. I'd say its a cut above most distortion/overdrive pedals I've used. Note that this is nothing like a Digitech DF 7 pedal. Won't model other pedals with a flick of a switch. I was able to dial muff/blues driver sounds only after tinkering about for a while. With most EH pedals it takes a while to get a good sound but once you've got it, you've got something good. I'd give this pedal an 8/10 for its tank like build, killer looks, variety of different tones, on board eq options and the top boost function. I don't play metal and haven't played many hi gain distortion pedals but I really liked this one and would recommend it to anyone who plays metal, classic rock, alternative, grunge music. Hell I play 60s psy-rock and the blues, I'd definitely buy this pedal for its warm overdrive. I think this is a great all in one pedal that would suit almost any style of rock music.
